Adoptions in Rwanda are finally gaining some traction- several Austin families have been approved and are awaiting news from the orphanage. This has freed me up to at least put some sort of time frame for when our son may be coming home (thinking December). It has also made me really pray for his birth mom. Is she pregnant with him now? Is she alive or did she die in childbirth? Is this her 1st or 7th child? She is the vessel that holds our son's life in her womb. We will be connected forever.
We have some good friends,
The Gross Family, living in Ethiopia and investing their energy and love into a publicly run orphanage. 90% of the children are abandoned before being brought to this orphanage, and the stories Jimmy and Rachel share are tragic. The needs in this orphanage and in many across the nation are similar: little funding, not enough staff, and great needs...the biggest one being one-on-one attention for these lonely children. Recently, Jimmy watched what may be a very similar situation to the one our son may face. He watched as a mother handed over her child.
"A young mom appeared at the orphanage with a little boy in her arms.
The workers assessed him for a few minutes, asked the mother a few questions, and then placed her baby in a crib. She was from the countryside, poor, and didn't have a husband. She desperately wanted an education so that somehow she could provide for her child...but in order for her to have that education, she had to sacrifice something. As the young mother walked off the property, I watched her wipe the tears from her eyes. She told someone she would come back in 3 years to bring her baby home again...or would she? What about her baby, in the mean time?"
"Thousands of babies and children are abandoned each year in Ethiopia...on the streets, in fields, and even the gates of police stations. Every week our family sees these children...new ones each week...and all of them have heartbreaking stories. The options for these children are limited...to live on the streets...or orphanages. We believe God's options are much better and much brighter...for the body of Christ to support the orphan in any way we can. And when we do...when we take the poor and homeless into our homes or help someone who does, our night becomes like the noon-day."
