• Ethiopia was the only African country to defeat a European colonial power in the 19th-century "Scramble for Africa" and maintain its independence.
  • Coffee, which was discovered in Ethiopia, is the country's largest export and is an important part of Ethiopian culture.
  • There are an estimated 760,000 people living with HIV in Ethiopia, and 900,000 orphans due to AIDS.
  • Because of the stigma associated with HIV, many people diagnosed with the virus are isolated and shunned by their families, despite the fact that the disease is entirely treatable and cannot be contracted through everyday interactions.

Ethiopia is a country that is intricately knitted into the hearts of so many of Noonday's Ambassadors and customers. So many of them have adopted from, or are in the process of adopting from, Ethiopia, and we have always been proud to help support these adoptions by donating trunk show proceeds to cover adoption costs. Noonday began purchasing from a special group of artisans near Addis Ababa who are living with the stigma caused by their HIV positive status. Now, Noonday is not only helping bring orphans home to their forever families, but helping keep Ethiopian families together through sustainable employment, job training, and fair wages. We also strive to create awareness about the treatability of HIV in order to remove the stigma and help create a culture of understanding in our own country and beyond.
